Excitement filled the halls of East Moriches Elementary as students and staff recognized “World Down Syndrome Day'' on 3/21 by wearing crazy socks. There were lots of colorful, mismatched, and downright wacky socks in celebration of this year’s theme “End the Stereotypes”. Congratulations to the grade level winners that received an award for our “crazy” paper sock decorating contest displayed in the cafetorium. As students giggled and compared their vibrant socks, the event served as an important reminder of the beauty found in embracing uniqueness and showing support for our friends and family with Down Syndrome.
As we wrap up our Crazy Sock Day, we are looking forward to continuing the journey of celebrating inclusivity throughout the month of April. Our PTO is kicking off World Autism Day on 4/2 by asking everyone to wear their favorite tie dye shirt. The Student Council and Mrs. Aragones are coordinating for students and staff to wear blue every Monday. In addition, our former student Abby Edwards will be hosting her annual Autism Awareness Pajama Day on 4/19. With this commitment to inclusivity, East Moriches sets a shining example of empathy and unity for schools everywhere.
